Issues & Accomplishments
Safety: Provide Herndon Police with the training and tools needed to protect our citizens. I voted to give Herndon Police 287(g) authority resulting in criminal illegal aliens to be detained by the Bureau of Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) for possible deportation. It has been very successful with over 200 criminal illegal aliens being taken off our streets. 287(g) WORKS!
Day Labor: I will continue to do what is legally necessary to discourage illegal aliens from making Herndon their home The present Council was successful in getting new legislation passed by the General Assembly which gives us the ability to regulate the solicitation of the sale of goods and services giving the town another tool in dealing with this issue.
Budget: Apply sound fiscal responsibility by keeping taxes low; Cut and save vs. tax and spend. Set borrowing limits; borrow only for major infrastructure projects, and long term capital improvements. Encourage citizen input and prioritize expenditures accordingly.
Downtown Redevelopment: Continue to work and negotiate for a unified downtown, mixed use redevelopment. Make sure the town gets the best deal and amenities for the town owned land to include a parking garage and undergrounding of utilities.
Overcrowding: I will continue to support a very aggressive approach to abate overcrowded conditions in our neighborhoods.
Neighborhood Redevelopment: Preserve Single family homes and neighborhoods. I will vote against rezoning applications that creates high density housing in our older quaint “small town” neighborhoods.
Infrastructure: Keep our roads, traffic controls, and utilities in good repair and maintain high standards in all Town services.
Seniors: Make access to public amenities safe and easy for those who have special needs in their travels. Continue to support the Harbor House and the Senior Center. I will be pursuing and encouraging council to consider ADA curb ramps and Pedestrian Crossings to include audible signaling for the blind be installed at critical intersections in town. The intersection of Dranesville Road and Herndon Parkway would be a good place to start. Federal and State ADA grant funding could be a source for funding and I will request the town staff to submit the appropriate grand applications.
Metro is coming to Herndon in 2016: We have put an RFP on the street to contract a consultant to come and work with the Planning Commision to identify what needs to be done in the design of our Metro stop. With no town owned land, we will have to raise the density levels in the area north of the toll road and south of the Herndon Parkway (part of our new Urban Develop Area) to encourage redevelopment and to get a proffered Kiss and Ride and other Metro related amenities. Public Hearings with the Planning Commission and the Town Council will give the citizens the opportunity to give us their views, opinions and suggestions on what our new Metro Stop should look like.
